Brian Townsend Still Down Huge in 2010

Brian Townsend, a.k.a sbrugby, has had a disastrous year at the tables and the bad news keeps on coming. The poker instructor for CardRunners is now down, for the year, an impressive $2.8 million which completely wipes out all his profit from last year which was estimated at $2.4 million. The news is particularly grim when you consider that the year is less than half over.

Trouble started brewing for Townsend last year when he had his Red Pro status suspended for a month at Full Tilt Poker after admitting to having data mined against Isildur1. He made his return to Full Tilt shortly after but that has only made things worse. Over 27,096 tracked hands in January, he lost about $314,000. February, unfortunately, was even worse for Brian loosing $1.3 million over 22,132 tracked hands.

Despite cauterizing the bleeding for a time, he has returned to spewing money in recent weeks. In a staggering display of cash spewing, Townsend managed to lose over $482,000 over an hour and a half against fellow poker pro Ilari Sahamies. Not to be deterred, a few days later he lost another $620,000 to Sahamies, Gus Hansen, and David Oppenheim.

Brian’s total losses for the year stand at a staggering $2.8 million having lost more than $1 million playing Omaha and another $1.8 million playing HORSE. More surprising still is the fact that he started focusing on mixed games after he lost $3.5 million in 2007 playing pot limit Omaha which prompted him to cash out from Full Tilt and change his focus. He decided to leave $50,000 in his account with the intention of rebuilding his bankroll starting with $20/$40 and $40/$80 games.

In an impressive bout of foresight he stated at the time that “The thought of losing everything I made this year or in the past year on such a downswing sickens me… to be honest I guess I am getting a bit older and am not willing to take the risks that I once was. I used to not mind the thought of losing a lot [of money] and grinding [sic] back up, but now I have no desire to have those swings in my life as they are incredibly stressful.”

It seems that stress is back in vogue for Mr. Townsend as he appears to be in the midst of a legendary one of those “sickening swings” and he can only hope that there will be a fortuitous shift in the trade winds or he is in for a very long summer.
