Low Limit Holdem Strategy

Playing holdem at low limits allows the beginner a great opportunity to learn the game without taking on significant financial risk. When playing live poker the lowest limit games with blinds $1/2, but when playing online poker the low limit games start at $0.01/0.02 on most poker sites.

First of all, pay close attention to starting hand selection. There are various starting hand charts for full ring or short handed games you can check out on the internet. Make sure to study the hand charts it will help your game immensely. As a new player it’s of the first things you should learn to understand what good hands to play depending on your position, table image, and your opponent’s tendencies.

When you first start playing poker a tight approach is probably the best low limit holdem strategy to avoid tough decisions. If you are open raising only with premium hands you will usually have a strong hand on the flop and you can continue with the hand.

What should be taken into consideration is that a super tight player who only plays premium starting hands will not win much at all, simply because the chances of getting great hands are low and when you do actually stare down at your cards and see a big pocket pair or big slick the other players at the table will be quick to fold to a tight player.

On the other hand, a super loose player who plays alot of hands including weaker holdings will usually go through his bankroll rather quickly unless they are running hot and get extremely lucky. Do you really want to rely heavily on luck to beat the game? The loose cannons are action seekers and want to win every pot. What bad loose players fail to realize is that in the long run this will be a losing strategy. Winning poker players know you don’t need to win more pots to make money playing low limit holdem, you simply need to win the most amount of money!

In my opinion the optimal strategy is to be somewhere in the middle of both these playing styles, neither super tight or super loose, with a good understanding of what starting hands to play and in which positions to play them.

Good starting hands consist of pairs and big cards, suited aces and broadway hands. Basically any hands which have the potential to make a big hand post flop. Speculative hands like suited aces and suited kings with weak kickers can be played in late position when it’s a big multi-way pot. If you hit the flop hard because there are alot of players in the pot there is a good chance you will get paid off! It’s the same with low pairs. Typically they are not a great hand but if you flop a set you can win a big pot.

If you were dealt big pocket pairs (QQ+) you’ll want to raise with them to limit the number of players who see the flop. The main objective with big pocket pairs is to ideally play in a heads up pot where you have the best chance of winning the hand.

Suited connectors are any hands with two cards of consecutive rank and of the same suit, such as JTs. These hands can also be worth playing but you’ll want to have position with these hands.

In addition to good starting hand selection you really need to take advantage of position at the table. It’s one of the most important aspects of the game. When you have position in the hand you have more information at your disposal and it gives you a better chance of winning when you don’t have the best hand.

Position can be broken into three main categories. Early position is considered to be the first four seats to the left of the Button, Middle position is the next 3 seats and and Late position is the last few seats including the Button.

Premium starting hands like big pairs and good top pair hands can be played in all of these positions, but you will want to be careful with playing weaker hands in early position as there are alot of players still yet to act in the hand who can re-raise you off a weaker hand, and you will be more then likely playing out of position if your raise is called.

Be careful with suited connectors which are small (such as 23s and 45s) because even if you make a flush, someone might make a higher flush and win your money. Even when you make a flush and raise the pot, another player can be chasing a bigger flush because they feel committed to the hand and they still have decent equity to win the hand.

It make sense to bet aggressively if the flop improves your starting hand, and to bet or call if you pick up a big draw (four cards to the best possible straight or flush). If you miss the flop, don’t be hesitant to release these hands quickly if you think the board hit your opponent’s range. Always consider the likely holdings of your opponents, you are playing your opponents just as much as your cards. The best hand doesn’t always win!

Low Limit Holdem especially online poker games is a great way to learn the game without having to invest huge sums of money. Be smart with your bankroll and follow proper bankroll management to avoid going bust. Be observant at the table so you can get better reads on your opponents. If this means playing fewer online tables then do so! In poker, information is power and it doesn’t always come when you’re in a hand. In fact, it’s easier to analyze what’s going on when your money is not at risk. Hopefully you found this Low Limit Holdem Strategy information useful and I am sure if followed will increase your win rate at the low limit ring game tables.
